  • How well protected is your garden?

  • When it comes to home insurance and looking after the security of your home, gardens can often be overlooked. It’s often easy to forget though that you might have expensive equipment in your garden that would cost a lot to replace.

Before you buy your home insurance policy it is a good idea to check if it covers your garden. Some policies won’t unless you specify that you would like to have those items insured.

If the items in your garden are worth more than the individual item limit on your policy you might also find that you aren’t covered if you need to make a claim. In that case you will need to have valuable items cover. You might have a lawnmower that is expensive or any number of tools that cost a lot that would need insurance.

Make sure that your shed is secure with a good modern lock installed and that no valuable items are visible. Gardens are generally easier to get into than houses so a burglar might easily be able to walk around your garden and have time to break into your shed without many problems.

If you have buildings insurance cover your fixed items will be covered, so that includes structures like a shed or a greenhouse. Contents insurance can be made to cover expensive plants and other ornaments in your garden but these can be more specialist policies and you will have to shop around for the best deal.

Insurance policies that cover your garden will generally be more expensive than a policy that just covers items inside your home. A way to reduce the extra cost would be to make your garden as secure as possible. That could mean making sure your garden has a secure entrance. If there is an outside gate it is a good idea to make sure it has a good lock and is secure as it possibly can be. Gates that are left open and have no lock just invite burglars.

If large objects are left lying around the garden they could also be an invitation. If a ladder is left lying around it could make it easy for a burglar to climb into a window that was accidentally left open for example. Other large objects could even be used to break into doors or windows.
